Escaping Reality, Creating Meaning: How Heritage Tourists Become Emotion Value Co-Creators in the Age of Generative AI

Draws on self-determination theory and service-dominant logic to examine how stress-relief-oriented escape, self-fulfillment, and digital information environments shape emotion value co-creation among 457 Gen Z heritage tourists in Shanxi Province, China. Escape motivation was negatively linked to co-creation while self-fulfillment mediated the pathway, and media promotion versus GenAI personalization produced contrasting moderation effects.

This study examines how stress-relief-oriented escape, self-fulfillment, and digital information environments are associated with emotion value co-creation among Generation Z cultural heritage tourists.

Drawing on self-determination theory (SDT) and service-dominant logic (SDL), the authors analyze survey data from 457 adult Gen Z tourists who had visited cultural heritage destinations in Shanxi Province, China, using partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Stress-relief-oriented escape was negatively associated with both self-fulfillment and emotion value co-creation, while self-fulfillment was positively associated with emotion value co-creation and carried a significant indirect association between escape and co-creation.

Moderation analyses revealed contrasting digital boundary conditions: higher media promotion progressively attenuated the negative escape relationships toward non-significance, whereas stronger GenAI personalization showed different, sometimes opposing, effects.

The findings suggest that heritage destinations aiming to activate Gen Z as emotion value co-creators should combine self-fulfillment-oriented experience design with careful calibration of GenAI personalization and destination media strategies.

Understanding the acceptance and use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a travel planning tool: UTAUT2 extended model

This study extends the UTAUT2 model with perceived anthropomorphism and perceived intelligence to explain what drives travelers to adopt AI tools for trip planning. Based on 176 survey respondents, performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, perceived anthropomorphism, and perceived intelligence all positively predict behavioral intention, and habit turns out to be central to sustained use.

Cooperative Interaction: A Taxonomy of Human-GenAI Interaction Patterns in Tourism

Grounded in cooperation theory, this qualitative study analyzes multi-turn user-GenAI conversations in tourism and derives a taxonomy of four interaction patterns: convergence-guidance, convergence-non-guidance, divergence-guidance, and divergence-non-guidance. The authors identify the challenges each pattern poses for travel decision-making and propose an optimization framework for designing more adaptive, context-aware tourism-specific GenAI.
