Your Rate Now Competes With a Points Price Inside Google's Answer

Google's new AI Mode hotel booking shows cash rates and loyalty-point prices side by side inside the same conversation. Hotels only control the rate Google reads, the listing content, and where the booking link lands.

This insight summarizes Markus Busch's Hospitality Net opinion on Google's new in-answer hotel booking experience.

Google put hotel booking inside its AI answer. As of Thursday, US travelers using Google's AI Mode can describe a trip, browse properties with reviews, and complete a purchase with Google Pay without leaving the conversation. Ten partners are live at launch: Booking.com, Choice, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG, Marriott, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham. The feature is English-only, US-only, and excludes the EEA for now.

Cash rates and points prices now sit in the same view. Choice, Hilton and Wyndham already show loyalty-point pricing alongside the nightly rate; Accor and Hyatt are coming. The friction that used to protect paid rates—leaving the search, opening a loyalty app, comparing manually—has been removed. A guest weighing a free night against your ADR now sees both answers in one glance.

Your rate is in that comparison either way. Busch's core point: whether or not you run a loyalty program, your published rate is being placed next to a "0 cash + X points" option inside the moment of decision. There is no opt-out from the comparison itself; there is only how well your side of it is represented.

What hotels still control. Three levers, all upstream of Google: the rate feed Google reads, the listing content quality (photos, descriptions, amenities, policies), and the destination the booking link resolves to. Weakness in any of the three shows up as a lower conversion inside someone else's UI.

A hard deadline is attached. Google is changing hotel rate feed requirements on September 30. Feeds that don't meet the new spec risk degraded or missing presence in exactly the surface this article is about. Rate-feed and connectivity work that has been sitting in a backlog should move to this month.

Takeaway for commercial and distribution teams. Treat Google's AI Mode as a new point-of-sale, not a new marketing channel. Audit rate feed health and September 30 readiness now, tighten listing content the way you would a top-of-funnel OTA, and decide deliberately how paid rates should be positioned when a loyalty option is one line away.
