This insight summarises What is GEO? What it means for independent hotels, an explainer by Femke Nollet, Content Specialist at Lighthouse, published on Hospitality Net on 5 November 2026. The article is contributed content, and Lighthouse sells a tool for tracking AI visibility.
Named, not ranked. SEO aims for a place in a list of links. GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, aims for a mention in an AI-written answer. SEO still matters, but it does not fully cover how assistants choose what to say. Nollet argues that independents hold an advantage in local knowledge and real character.
Four signals. Clear facts such as room count, distances and pet policy give an assistant something to quote. Consistent information matters because assistants also draw on OTA listings, review sites and third-party pages. Proof from others means reviews, trusted mentions and consistent review replies. Accurate live rates and availability matter because an assistant without reliable data may send travellers elsewhere.
How conflicts play out. In the article's example, a fictional 14-room hotel in Bruges says on its website that check-in is at 3 pm and dogs are welcome. Its Google Business Profile says 4 pm, and an OTA says no pets and paid parking. An assistant seeing all this may repeat any one answer or leave the hotel out.
Evidence, with limits. Lighthouse reports that traffic to travel sites from AI sources grew 194% in 2026 compared with the year before. A March 2026 BCG and NYU Tisch Center study found 37% of travellers already use AI assistants built into travel sites to plan and book. An AirOps study attributed 85% of brand mentions to third-party content, though the article notes that it covered business software searches, not hotels.
AIHA practical takeaway. Keep a one-page fact sheet covering address, room count, check-in and check-out times, parking, pet policy and distances, then make the website, listings and booking tools match it. Test two or three assistants monthly or quarterly with guest-style prompts, and log the prompt, date and errors. When an answer is wrong, correct the underlying source rather than the chat, then retest after a few weeks. No developer is needed to start, and no one can guarantee how quickly changes will appear.
