This insight summarises The New Math Behind Travel's AI Roll-Ups, by Rafat Ali, founder and CEO of Skift, published on Skift on 28 October 2026.
A different acquisition thesis. Travel consolidation has usually meant buying competitors and removing overlapping costs. A new kind of buyer argues that AI can make acquired companies more productive and therefore more valuable. Ali notes that the same logic could also push buyers to pay more for those businesses.
Long Lake and Amex GBT. Long Lake, backed by General Catalyst, completed its $6.3 billion purchase of American Express Global Business Travel in September, supported by $2.5 billion in committed debt financing, and plans to deploy its Nexus AI platform inside the business. Long Lake has made roughly 40 acquisitions in sectors such as HOA management and payroll. General Catalyst reports that some HOA managers reclaim more than 65 hours a month and that payroll processing capacity rose by more than 30%. These are the investor's own figures.
Hard to isolate the AI effect. Amex GBT's CWT deal already carried an expected $155 million in annual run-rate synergies. Italian unions have linked a proposed redundancy procedure affecting 190 CWT Italia employees to ownership changes and AI investment, but Amex GBT had planned CWT integration reductions before Long Lake took control.
Engine and Options Travel. Engine, backed by Permira, bought corporate travel agency Options Travel (about $408 million in annual gross sales) and its TempoTrip group-flights product. Engine aims to learn how corporate travel works and build an AI-native platform it could later sell to other travel management companies. Its CEO pointed to roughly 500,000 faxes sent in a 30-day period as an example of the manual work still in the business.

AIHA practical takeaway. When a vendor, owner or acquirer claims AI productivity gains, ask for the baseline, separate AI results from ordinary integration savings, and check whether the gain holds at a second property running different systems. Corporate sales teams should also ask TMC partners how platform changes will affect rate loading, group requests and payment documents.
