This insight summarises Skift Data + AI Summit Europe 2026: AI Is Ubiquitous, Yet Still Unconquered, by Dan Marcec, published on Skift on 13 October 2026.
The headline. Stricter regulation and a fragmented market are pushing executives who oversee AI in European travel into harder conversations. Agentic booking dominated the agenda, with new entrants such as Instinct and Muse joining the market. Seth Borko, Skift's Head of Research, warned: "The agents are here," and "Almost no one [in travel] is ready for this world."
Independent hotels risk invisibility. Carlo Del Mistro, founder of Stiplo, shared a study of more than 27,000 travel queries across 650-plus Barcelona hotels. Independent hotels were eight times more likely than chains to be unknown to AI systems, but once known they were recommended at similar rates. Google review volume was the strongest driver of AI visibility, while llms.txt files showed no measurable advantage.
Convenience will not carry agentic booking. Kayak CEO Peer Bueller and Skyscanner CEO Bryan Batista argued that trust, selection and price verification remain unresolved. Skyscanner research found 51% of surveyed travelers have concerns about AI accuracy or reliability.
How operators are running AI. Accor, IAG, Strawberry and Amex GBT described:
- Narrowing AI work to a few projects with a visible return.
- Owning infrastructure only where control matters.
- Treating EU AI Act governance as a review process for experiments, not a stop sign. Amex GBT reviewed roughly 139 AI tools or use cases in the past year, up from 13.
No winner yet. Richard Clarke of Bernstein said no clear AI winner has emerged in consumer industries. AI referrals remain below 2% at both Booking and Marriott, though they are growing exponentially.
Why this matters for hotels. AI-driven bookings are still small, but discovery is being decided now. Independent hotels should treat review volume and accurate data as visibility assets, and every operator should focus AI spend on use cases with measurable returns and a clear governance path.
