From Ranking to Being Cited: The Execution Plan for AI Search Visibility

Anil Aggarwal (Milestone) lays out a 90-day loop to move hotels from SEO rankings to AI citations — measure prompt visibility, deploy schema, publish targeted content, and get agent-ready before 2027.

This insight summarises From Ranking to Being Cited: The Execution Plan for AI Search Visibility in Hospitality by Anil Aggarwal, CEO of Milestone Inc.

The shift. Traditional SEO optimised for rank on a results page. AI engines cite hotels based on structured, verifiable, current data — not rankings. The guest journey now splits three ways: website visits, in-LLM discovery and booking, and agent-led transactions. Each path needs its own optimisation, and one-time tuning no longer works.

Why it's urgent. Over 76% of Gen Z and Millennial travellers now use AI for trip planning, and ChatGPT referrals to travel sites have grown roughly fifteenfold in 16 months. When a hotel's data is incomplete, models fall back on citing OTAs instead — a "grounding failure" that costs 15–25% in commissions on every booking that leaks off-brand.

How AI actually picks a hotel. Models decompose a guest's natural-language description into multiple sub-queries (location, amenities, vibe, price band, family-friendliness, etc.). A property only surfaces if it answers all of them. Gaps in structured data or content directly translate into gaps in citation.

The continuous execution loop:

  1. Measure visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini and other engines for 40–50 prompts that match how real guests describe your property.
  2. Generate targeted content that fills the zero-visibility prompts.
  3. Deploy schema markup (organisation, locations, offers, events, reviews) and verify AI crawlers aren't blocked.
  4. Distribute widely so the citations compound across sources the models trust.

A 90-day plan:

  • Days 1–30 — Measure: Baseline AI visibility across 40–50 relevant prompts. Audit listing accuracy across the sources models cite.
  • Days 31–60 — Deploy: Ship structured data schema for organisation, locations, offers, events and reviews. Confirm AI crawlers can reach your site.
  • Days 61–90 — Publish: Build an editorial calendar targeting the prompts where you score zero, using brand-appropriate, source-verified generative tools.

Get agent-ready for 2027, not 2029. Emerging protocols will let AI agents query booking data directly. That requires clean rates, live availability, and structured content in the systems agents can reach. Ask every vendor — PMS, CRS, booking engine, CMS — for their protocol roadmap now.
