The Mystery of the Disappearing Destination: How AI Is Transforming Travel Discovery

Skift Research finds AI shapes travel at inspiration and after booking far more than at checkout, and that 29% of strong-fit traveler and destination pairings never make the AI-generated shortlist.

This insight summarises The Mystery of the Disappearing Destination: How AI Is Transforming Travel Discovery, a Skift Research report by Saniya Zanpure published on 1 October 2026. The full report is available to Skift Research subscribers; this summary draws on the publicly released findings.

AI sits at both ends of the journey. Combining a booking-journey diary study published with McKinsey & Company, a survey of more than 1,000 U.S. travelers and a large language model destination study, Skift found AI accounts for 21% of touchpoints at inspiration, 16% at research, just 6% at booking and 29% after booking.

Trust drops when money is involved. Travelers are roughly twice as comfortable using AI for ideas, comparisons and practical details (40% to 50%) as for booking (27%). And 63% prefer a curated shortlist over an unfiltered catalogue or a single AI-chosen itinerary.

Recommendations concentrate. The top five destinations captured 38% of AI recommendations and the top ten captured 48%. That is slightly less concentrated than actual international arrivals, so AI may widen consideration while still producing a shortlist.

The AI visibility gap. 29% of persona and destination pairs assessed as a high fit were never recommended. AI also personalises the pitch for each traveler type far more than it changes the underlying list of places.

A new gate in the funnel. Skift frames the result as a new sequence: awareness, then AI consideration, then search and validation, then booking. Being a good fit is no longer enough to be seen.

Practical takeaways:

  1. Check how AI tools describe and rank you for each guest segment you target.
  2. Invest in inspiration and post-booking content, where AI use is highest.
  3. Keep the booking path trusted and simple, since few travelers are ready to let AI complete the purchase.

Why this matters for hotels. The same filter that hides destinations can hide properties. Appearing on the AI shortlist is now a distribution question, not only a marketing one.
