Being listed and being chosen are two different outcomes. Ranking algorithms have shaped OTA and search visibility for years, but most hotels have never interrogated how they actually work. That's a problem now that a second layer — LLM-based personalisation and AI assistants — sits on top of the same signals and amplifies the winners.
What today's algorithms actually reward. Price and star rating are the shallowest inputs. Ranking and personalisation systems evaluate:
- Completeness and specificity of structured attributes (amenities, room types, policies).
- Consistency between listing copy, website, and third-party mentions.
- Review language — whether guests describe the property the same way the hotel does.
- Historical conversion behaviour of similar travellers on similar dates.
The traveller journey has changed. Travellers now consume 303 minutes of travel content across 45 days before booking. Every one of those touchpoints — OTA listing, social clip, review, AI answer — is algorithmically curated. A hotel that shows up inconsistently across those surfaces gets filtered out before price ever enters the conversation.
What to do this week.
- Audit structured attributes across every platform — completeness first, accuracy second. Blank fields are downranking signals.
- Run guest reviews through a language scan and compare to your positioning statements. Fix the ones that drift.
- Test discoverability directly: query ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI overviews for the trip your property actually serves. Note where you're missing.
- Enforce cross-surface consistency — OTA, website, reviews, social — as a distribution KPI, not a brand exercise.
The question to ask. Not "are we listed?" — that's table stakes. The question is "when an algorithm has to choose one property for this traveller, why us?" If the answer isn't visible in the attributes, reviews, and mentions the algorithm can read, the algorithm will pick someone else.
